MDCG 2026 UDI Assignment: Manufacturer and Distributor Responsibilities for Orthopedic Instruments
Share
In July 2026, the Medical Device Coordination Group listed MDCG 2026-5, a position paper addressing UDI assignment between manufacturers and distributors. For orthopedic instrument businesses, the practical message is that commercial branding, distribution and regulatory identification must be separated clearly.
Why UDI responsibility matters
The European Commission’s MDCG guidance index lists the 2026 position paper, while its UDI overview explains that manufacturers assign UDI information to devices and higher packaging levels before placing devices on the market. Distributors should not treat identifier assignment as ordinary catalog administration.
Define the economic operators before artwork approval
Before approving OEM labeling, record the legal manufacturer, authorized representative where applicable, importer, distributor and brand owner. Confirm who controls the Basic UDI-DI, UDI-DI, device registration, declaration, labeling and technical documentation. A private-label arrangement can affect responsibilities and must be reviewed for the target market.
Control product and packaging levels
The device, unit packaging, set packaging and shipping carton may require different identifiers or data structures depending on the applicable rules. Buyers should provide the approved product reference, packaging hierarchy, quantity per level, label dimensions, barcode format and revision before production.
Avoid common OEM errors
Do not copy a UDI from a similar instrument, reuse identifiers after an uncontrolled specification change, place a distributor’s name in the manufacturer field without review, or add regulatory symbols simply because they appear on a competitor’s label. Record every pending data element before artwork release.
ORTHOSURGI quotation workflow
For custom marking and packaging, review our OEM and private-label program and quality information. Select the relevant models from our orthopedic instruments and submit the destination market, operator roles, packaging levels and required label fields through the RFQ page.
This article is general procurement information, not legal or regulatory advice. UDI duties depend on the device, role and market.
