ISO/TS 17664-3:2026: Cleaning Classification for Reusable Orthopedic Instruments
Share
ISO published ISO/TS 17664-3:2026 in June 2026. The technical specification provides guidance for assigning reusable medical devices to cleaning-classification categories and linking product families to cleaning processes. For orthopedic instrument manufacturers, distributors and sterile-processing stakeholders, the update reinforces the value of structured, model-specific processing information.
What ISO/TS 17664-3:2026 covers
The official ISO overview explains that the document addresses cleaning-classification categories, product-family attributes and the designation of cleaning processes. It is intended to help manufacturers develop cleaning methods and processing information.
A cleaning classification is not a substitute for an instrument’s validated instructions for use. It can help organize device families, but geometry, joints, lumens, surface characteristics, disassembly requirements and material compatibility still need model-level assessment.
Why instrument geometry matters
A one-piece osteotome, a hinged bone-cutting forceps and a multi-component depth gauge do not present the same cleaning challenge. Box locks, serrations, narrow cavities, removable parts and textured handles can influence access, debris retention, rinsing and inspection. Buyers should ask how the proposed instrument family was grouped and which model represents the most difficult cleaning condition.
Processing information buyers should request
Before approving reusable instruments, request the exact product reference, material and finish, opening or disassembly instructions, validated cleaning method, detergent compatibility, rinsing and drying steps, inspection points, maintenance requirements, packaging method, sterilization parameters where applicable, and storage conditions. The information should match the supplied configuration and destination market.
The FDA’s reprocessing guidance similarly emphasizes validated reprocessing instructions and appropriate labeling for reusable medical devices. Local health-care facilities must follow the manufacturer’s validated instructions and applicable national requirements.
Applying the update to orthopedic procurement
When evaluating products from the osteotomes, chisels and gouges collection, rongeurs and bone cutters collection, or drill guides and depth gauges collection, identify the exact model before requesting processing information. Avoid using one generic instruction sheet across mechanically different devices unless the grouping and validation support it.
ORTHOSURGI’s documentation position
We recommend recording processing-document status in the quotation and component table. If an IFU or validation file is not confirmed for the requested model, it should be marked pending rather than assumed. Visit our quality page or submit a model-specific RFQ with the destination market and documentation required.
